PRESS ON THE ALBUM!

Cypress Hill's Muggs has a new album out, "Muggs Presents...

The Soul Assassins" and the press corps is salivating. Here's a random sampling of some early reactions to the Soul Assassins:

PLAYBOY (June issue), Nelson George: "...this year's best hip hop offering..."

SPIN (April issue), Jesse Berrett: "Taking back the sonic baton he handed to the Wu-Tang Clan's RZA, Muggs sets a team of MC theorists against his version of trip-hop's noir melodrama -- piano shards echoing into infinity, drumbeats pounding against the darkness, overheard radio static. ..It's a fully imagined, cinematic backdrop..."

INTERVIEW (April issue),David Sprague: "On his 'solo' bow...he reveals the true scope of his mixmastery, erecting aural canvases...Think of Muggs as a one-man mix tape, and you'll begin to grasp his party-startin' potential."

REQUEST (April issue), Havelock Nelson: "...Muggs Presents...the Soul Assassins, his first solo set and a landmark album featuring such emcee quasars as Wu-Tang...is the perfect marriage of one of rap's best musical minds and some of its most magical mouths."

ADDICTED TO NOISE (April),Kembrew McLeod: "...this album could stand on its own as an instrumental masterpiece...DJ Muggs has, quite simply, made a great hip hop album."

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY (3/14/97), Matt Diehl: "A-" "As DJ/producer for Cypress Hill, Muggs looms large among rap's studio wizards. This collection solidifies his rep...His apocalyptic grooves steal the show, while brooding strings and eerie trip-hop effects bring a mournful soul feel to his street beats."

TV GUIDE ONLINE (2/28): "Cypress Hill's DJ Muggs pulls a Quincy Jones on this LP, laying down backing tracks for his friends to rap over. With friends such as Wu-Tang Clan, KRS-1, Goodie Mob, Mobb Deep and Dr. Dre, the result is one of the best rap LPs of the year. Best moment: back-to-back, end-of-the-world rants from Wu-Tang and Cypress Hill."
