Obligated Struggle
I've been a warrior ever since I was born
As a youngster I was fed revolution and
tortillas made from corn
And taught that survival is only reserved
for the strong
So at a very young age, I looked to my people
and realized something was wrong
At some point we stopped being warriors
and become survivors
Surviving everything we were presented
Looking back
En vez de mirando para el frente
Surviving poverty,
Teenage pregnancy,
The belief that you and I are enemies,
The robbery of our deities,
The isolation from their exclusive fraternities.
So concerned with survival are we
That we forget to feed our seeds with
our own history
So concerned with survival are we
that in order to come up we call others family,
wear a do-rag
and kill other from another set like it was our duty.
So concerned with survival are we
that we'll die to protect the hood that we call our own
knowing damn well our parents rent that home.
But so concerned with survival are we,
that the stress blurs our vision
So we're blind to the plot of our people's division.
Divide and conquer has been the plan from the very start,
so concerned with survival are we
that we gladly play the part.
So I'm sending out a shout, I'm sending out a plead
People of color unite, let's all get down
I gotta have it
Change your mindset from surviving
and start fighting.
Fighting for a living wage,
for a bigger part on the stage,
fighting for a better age.
Fighting so in the future our children will be living
Breathing, playing, smiling
Instead of another generation that's just surviving.
